About Sivananda Ashramam, Olavakkode

About five decades ago, library named after H. H. Swami Sivananda Saraswathi Maharaj, founder of Sivanannda Ashramam and the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, Himalaya came into being in the Railway colony at Hemambika Nagar near the temple dedicated to the worship of lord Ganesa. This library, Sivananda Grandhalayam, stocked with a few books and periodicals published from Rishikesh by the Swamiji was organised and run by devotees of Swamiji Maharaj. This is the humble begining of the present Sivananda Ashramam at Palakkad, now grown into a spiritual centre of varied activities.

H. H. Swami Gnanananda Saraswathi, one of the monastic disciples of the H. H. Sivanannda Swamiji Maharaj used to visit the library and address spiritual gathering in thelibrary hall. Gradually the number of devotees increased, particularly to participate in the Bhagavatha – Sapthaha wich the Swamiji used to conduct every year. With the steady growth of such spiritual preachings, it was found necessary that an organisation be formed for a more methodical conduct and improvement of the activities of the centre.

The Ganesa temple and the Divine Life Society with their assets were duly entrusted to H. H. Swami Gnanananda with the express desire that the centre be run as an Ashramam under his Direction. Thus the Sivananda Ashramam, Palakkad came in to being. The Swamiji nominated Swami Nityananda Saraswathi as the president of the Ashramam.

The Sivananda Ashramam has risen to its present state of glory and fame mainly due to the devotion and hardwork of H. H. Swami Nityananda Saraswathi for the last 20 years.
